New Year’s Dash In The Pan

Alright. So. First off I would like to know who the wise guy is that made me think I had started last year’s New Year dash the day after Christmas? And who kept me from doing some simple math? I was happily prospecting on the amount of spinning I would get done, and possibly even complete spinning all the fiber you see below (carefully selected from the dozens of applicants) when someone casually mentioned the fact that the New Year was a mere six days away.

Crash. Bang. Shriek of car brakes. WHAT?!?!?!??!?

Last year I took ten days. Started on December the twenty-second. There I was, December twenty-sixth, thinking I would get even more fiber spun then last year. Ha ha ha. Ha ha.

Fall Out of Spring

While reorganizing my stash I ran across the un-dyed silk hankies I bought at the SAFF, and I was immediately seized with the desire to dye them in shades of green.

Silk Hankies

Silk Hankies

Then, since one wasn’t enough for very much yarn, I decided to dye some of the Iowa fleece to go with it in the rather fall shades of chestnut, gold, and crimson. I know we’re barely into spring as it is, but I thought it would look nice.

If you’ve never heard of a “silk hankie” before, it’s quite a neat little contraption. When the silk worm is born (or killed, whichever), you de-gum the cocoon and spread it out onto a little square frame. One by itself is practically non-existent, so you layer multiples on top of each other, and eventually wind up with what looks like a handkerchief made out of silk.

New For 2009

While it’s not exactly a “New Year’s Resolution,” I sat down awhile back and tried to come up with a list of ten fibers I’d like to try this year. They are . . .

  • Cotton
  • Flax
  • Corn (Yes, they have corn roving. They have bamboo too—what did you expect?)
  • Bamboo (see reverse of above)
  • Ramie (Read about it here)
  • Soysilk
  • Mohair (the fuzzyness)
  • Angora Rabbit
  • And two “Wild Cards.” You never know. I might discover something very interesting!

The next place I stopped was Whorling Tides. She had some beautiful, beautiful stuff. I walked past, glanced into the booth and saw this.
